When I downloaded "That Bear Ate My Pants" as a Kindle freebie, I was expecting a mildly amusing tale about a guy's experiences with animals. What I got instead was an uproariously funny account of a hapless but lovable idiot's adventures in Ecuador... and to my delight, said account was very well-written as well, certainly a step above many Kindle freebies and even on par with Bill Bryson, one of the most famous travel writers ever. When Tony Slater's book "Kamikaze Kangaroos" cropped up as a freebie as well, I snapped it up... and ended up falling in love with Mr. Slater's work, to the extent that I decided to support his further misadventures by actually buying his next three books -- "Don't Need the Whole Dog," "Shave My Spider," and this book. Because not only is a good independent writer worth supporting, but as another reviewer pointed out, supporting Tony means supporting another entertaining adventure that can then be turned into another side-splitting book."Can I Kiss Her Yet?" may look like a lull in the adventure, but don't be fooled -- it's just as funny and adventurous as his other books, and while it does have the more episodic feel of "Don't Need the Whole Dog," his impending nuptials provide an excellent story arc of sorts."Kamikaze Kangaroos" closed with Tony proposing to his Australian girlfriend Roo, and in "Can I Kiss Her Yet?" the duo set out to plan a nice fairy-tale wedding (literally, as they opt for a medieval/fantasy themed wedding). This isn't nearly as easy as it sounds -- not only are they working with an extremely limited budget gained by Tony selling his body to medical science, but they have to get Roo legally into the country for the wedding, Tony faces embarrassing but necessary surgery on a rather intimate body part, and Tony's family is struggling to find a publisher for his first book. And somehow in the middle of the mess, they find time for a wild vacation in Jordan... and Tony and Roo's honeymoon will take them on a mysterious trip to Spain and an epic (and grueling) hike across Scotland. Can these two intrepid adventurers find wedded bliss, or will wedding planning and globe-trotting misadventures do them in first?Much like "Don't Need the Whole Dog," "Can I Kiss Her Yet?" is a bit more episodic in feel than other books -- whereas "Bear" dealt primarily with his volunteer experience in Ecuador and "Kangaroos" with his road trip around Australia, there's not a single overarching adventure in either "Dog" or "Kiss" but a series of them strung together. Unlike "Dog," however, "Kiss" does have the central "story arc" of Tony and Roo's wedding to tie it all together, and so said adventures don't seem to chop the book up as much as they did in "Dog."And as always, Tony's irreverent and self-depreciating humor makes this book a riot to read, and provides humor even in miserable circumstances. His sense of humor might be a bit off-putting if you're not a fan of strong language or humor involving body parts -- but it's still freaking hilarious. And let's face it, when you're faced with surgery on a rather delicate part of your anatomy, it helps to have a sense of humor about it. That's probably the main reason Tony's still alive after everything he's been through -- if you can laugh about some mishap or catastrophe, you're well on your way to getting through it okay.Another hilarious adventure by a self-proclaimed "idiot," and well worth the money. Tony Slater is well on his way to becoming the next Bill Bryson, and I look forward to reading his fifth and newest book very soon!
