Just after college, I came very close to taking a job on the railroad. This book makes me think of what could have been…The book is extremely detailed in the goings on of the railroad. The author shares his experience from being a new recruit to later becoming a railroad conductor and engineer. I was surprised by how dangerous the job is (though I guess I shouldn’t be since you’re dealing with large, heavy steel objects). The author explains how he was almost killed as a new recruit on the job. Was interesting to hear about the lifestyle as well; you’re always on the move and sometimes home for only hours at a time.If you or someone you know are interested in working on the railroad, this is a perfect book. Would be great for a gift!
